Personally I don't think you need to consume every bit of media relating to the show to be a fan, but you definitely do need to if you want to properly analyse a character from it. Especially Nagisa, where huge chunks of his characterisation come solely from additional material (because he got sort of a raw deal when it came to development in the 1st season).

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)Then again, show me the episode and scene where it's said that Nagisa "is entirely blase about masculinity or femininity". There isn't one. It's fanon made up by fans who then sincerely believe that it's canon, and anything contradicting it in fics is OOC fanon. Which is bizarre.
