It's not just jRPGs. Pretty much most games made even 10 years ago had weird difficulty issues. The further back you go the more arcane and inscrutable it gets. You couldn't pay me to play Wasteland again.

So not exactly JRPG, but: I played the first four Ace Attorney games in the months before Dual Destinies was released.

I felt almost insulted when I didn't even have to think about finding a walkthrough for that one.

idk I sometimes miss having to think to solve puzzles in rpgs (j or otherise) these days. Basically I miss Final Fantasy IX and Baldur's Gate 2

I remember playing lufia ii back in the day and the third yellow block puzzle had my 9 year old brain stumped for two weeks. this was shortly before we had a computer. it was hella frustrating at the time, but I have to admit I look fondly back on it now. I accosted a girl who got off the school bus with me to come to my house to help out and then she became my childhood bff.
