Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)I was a huge part of a fandom for many years. And every year, I ran a contest, with the prizes paid out of my own pocket and a lot of organization involved that I handled myself. And though it was a lot of work and a bit of stress, it was really fun and I liked it.
But in the last year all my interest in the fandom has dropped away.
And I'm still expected to run this contest this year, and I know people look forward to it. Any other year I would have gently explained to everyone that I'm leaving the fandom and tried to give someone else the reigns, but unfortunately this year coming up is a milestone year, and it seems very odd to stop right now. I know that I can definitely say with this year's contest, "This will be the _th and final contest run by me, as I'm choosing to end on a high note!"
Strictly speaking I could run the contest and even track down the prizes (though that part would be a little more painful than the rest). I just really don't feel like it. Which makes me feel like kind of a terrible person. So I dunno, what would you do?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)Can you just hand over the reigns entirely, then, and act more as a consulting voice if need be?
Re: Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)Fandom isn't a job, so stop treating it like one. People will understand.

Re: Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)If you don't want to do it again, just don't do it. If it bothers you to give over control of your past project to someone else, then don't give it up. People can obviously start their own similar challenge if they want, so maybe you could say something like that. ("You're free to start another similar challenge under a different name but XX Challenge will not continue on any more.")
Re: Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)But I'm kind of a pushover.
You could announce that you want to have one last year of the contest for old times' sake, but have a lot of other things going on and would like some help making it happen? I don't think that would be out of line.
Re: Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)Seeing that you don't want to co-run it, you could try to find someone to adopt it entirely?
Re: Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)And maybe give them a guide of what you did to organize it?
Re: Fandom Dilemma
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)I honestly wouldn't do it if you're that disinterested, because then it becomes an obligation, and that's when things fall through, I think. You don't want to fall into that trap. :/
