Nah, you could pick it up. The setup is basically Wizard-police, they fight magic crime. And bicker. Mostly bicker.

Pale Fire, by Vladimir Nabokov.

I really want to read it, but it might...strike people as being a little too weird. So, I'm also gonna put in for The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin. This is one I've already read, and I love it. It features a species that becomes sexually dimorphic only when they're going to mate; it grapples with gender and culture and the nature of love, but it does so in a very interesting way and against an engaging narrative backdrop.
