I have no idea guy wise, but anything below 5'1" is short and anything above 5'9" is tall.

Depends entirely on which sex or ethnicity we're talking about. Average heights differ vastly across the globe, and what I'd consider average for a Mayalsian guy (where the average height is 5'4") is totally different from what I'd consider short for a Dutch guy (where the average height is 6'1"). It also depends on how old the person in question is, because the average height for someone now in their 20-30s will be markedly different from someone a generation or two older.

But for a male of European descent now in his 20s in Canada? 5'10"'s average, so anything one standard deviation above the norm is tall (i.e. over 6") or below it (i.e. under 5'8") is short. For a female of the same age/ethnic background, 5'5's average so below 5'3" is short, over 5'7" is tall.

Actually jumping out to the point it's defining rather than "on the upper or lower end of average"?

For a man 6'2 for tall, and 5'8 for short.

For a woman 5'9 for tall and 5'3 for short.

For guys I consider below 170 cm short and 185-190 cm to be tall. For girls I think below 160-165 cm to be fairly short and tall at around 180 or so. Posture and stuff like that matters too of course.

This may be a bit skewed due to the fact that I'm a 175 cm tall girl who doesn't think herself to be all that tall as most of my friends are about the same height.

I'm 178 cm and I don't think of myself as particularly tall either because I know so many women and girls who are as tall or taller, so it always surprises me when people call me tall. Then again, looking at population statistics, they're right and we're wrong >>

I wonder if tall people collect tall friends or something.

lol made me think of the third paragraph of this https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120922025343AAKcEmq

This! At least in my home country. Where I am now, I'm so used to almost everyone being shorter than me that it never even occurs to me until I meet someone taller (I'm 178 too). Then I'm like "THIS MUST BE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE"

If you are taller than me you are tall, if you are shorter than me you are short, this goes for any gender.

This is more or less me, as well. Though, since I'm 5ft zero in a family where 5ft10 is the average, basically if you're my height or shorter, you're short, and if you're anything over it you're tall and I hate you.

Well, okay. More like mildly resent than hate. Still. Would it kill people to keep breakables lower down?

Same. And I'm 5'8 and that's considered a bit tall for a girl in my country but you're considered short to me if you're shorter than me. Which means more than half of my country people are short.

That's pretty much how I go about it as well. I'm 5'4".

Clothing size for me dictates I'm short, or rather petite at 5 foot 2 inches. Then a few family members that are over 6 feet. They are tall.

Women: 5'3 or below is kind of short. 5'7 or above is tall. (Not even sure that 5'7 is particularly tall for a woman, but...I'm super short so it feels that way.)

Men: 5'5 or under is a little on the short side, and 6'2 or up is tall.

I have to stress though, if you are taller than me I probably consider you reasonably tall. And if you are over 6'0 I consider you a fucking giant.

So, I'm assuming you mean short/tall enough that would be included in your description of the person, but not necessarily where you'd say, "Wow, now that guy/gal is really short/tall."

Women: Anything under 5'2" is short and anything over 5'7" is tall.

Men: Anything under 5'6" is short and anything over 6'2" is tall.

Ahhaha! Bummer! Here I was, 5', thinking, Short? Well, it'd be under five feet tall... Only to find that I'm the short one, as far as everyone else is concerned... ;)

No, I agree with you. Everyone else seems to have these very exact dimensions for tall vs short, whereas my "average" range is like a foot. 5 to 6 feet? You're average, congrats. :)

For women: below 5'6" is short, above 5'10" is tall.
For men: below 5'8" is short, above 6'2" is tall.

For the record, I'm a woman who stands between 5'10"-5'11".

A lot of average heights in the world are below your short standards. Are you saying that most people are short? Because that doesn't make sense.

I'm saying that I would consider people of those average heights to be short. I'm not making an objective, statistical statement; I'm answering the question about what heights make me think, "That person is short."

Re: What heights do you consider tall and short?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 04:52 am (UTC)(link)

I wouldn't consider a man "short" unless he's shorter than me. And I'm about 5'5". I think it's ridiculous when people consider a man who is 5'8" or 5'9" short. To me, that's average, and 6 feet and up would be "tall."

Speaking of my generation and nationality only (UK, early 30s) I'd say that, for women, below 5'4 is short and over 5'9 is tall. For men, below 5'9 is short and above 6'2 is tall.
