Re: Yuletide: is anyone up for answering my questions?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)For example, if you'd like to write a Julius Caesar fic but the characters you feel most comfortable focusing on are Brutus and Cassius, you can nominate Brutus and Cassius so that they are available to you (and any potential requesters) when it's time to sign up. Then you'd list "Julius Caesar, Brutus, Cassius" as one of your offers when you sign up, so that the organizers know they can match you with people who also requested Brutus or Cassius as a character.
This DOES NOT mean that you can't write a story that includes other characters in it if you get matched! Other characters are fine. It just ensures that you won't get matched with someone who also requested Julius Caesar fic but only wants Caesar / Statue of Pompey.
I don't think there's anything in the Yuletide signup that restricts what characters you can write about as long as you don't ignore your recipients' requested characters. Occasionally, you'll be matched with someone who will say, "By the way, please don't include Character X, even in the background." Then you should steer clear of Character X.
But "story with Brutus and Cassius" doesn't mean "story containing only Brutus and Cassius and no one else;" it means "story that does not fail to be about Brutus and/or Cassius."
Does this answer make sense? Let me know if I just made it more confusing. I'll do the other questions in a separate comment.
I'm not sure what you mean by "characters whose original appearance was over 100 years ago." Yuletide has a lot of "old" fandoms (an understatement). I'm pretty sure any character you want to request has to be nominated first, whether they have been around for more than a hundred years or not.
