If it is 4 years+ old, and gets heavy daily use then it is possible you are just running into its planned obsolescence period. My money is still on dirt, but you may have to (cautiously) disassemble and clean the keyboard. It is a high risk move though. Or just buy a USB keyboard and use that instead.
