My history teacher didn't read that part. I'm kind of curious what you're referring to. (All I can find on the Internet is stuff about how sexist the book is.)

SPOILERS for The Jungle

Basically the main character is working his ass off and has a pregnant wife and other kids to feed. When the wife gives birth she dies in childbirth, not sure if the child survives, but it's sort of the straw that broke the camel's back and he runs away and becomes a vagrant/hobo for about 9 (if I remember correctly, he enjoys it for the most part) or so months before returning to the city and going into strikes and things and he eventually meets up with his family. They are living in much worse conditions now and I think the eldest daughter or something has to become a prostitute/works in a brother/something like that (if I remember correctly she brings in fairly decent money and enjoys the people she "works" with). From there it basically leads up to a big speech the MC listens to about how Socialism will brighten everyone's future and bring about so much good social change so vote Socialism today!

But yes, as I mentioned, when I hear about leaving the family situations in real life, I know it's terrible and stuff, but when this happened I lost all sympathy for the MC, which prior to this I thought he was fairly sympathetic.
