Re: How do your beliefs line up with your parents?

I'm an atheist and a socialist (the kind of person who is always lamenting that US politics doesn't have a left wing). My parents are conservative Catholic (US) religious rightists who use "Democrat" and "socialist" interchangeably as insults.

The majority of my values come directly from my parents, though -- love your neighbor, think critically, put yourself in other people's shoes, examine your beliefs, check your sources, treat people with respect, share what you have with those in need. These are all things I was told were important by my parents and in Catholic school, and I still think they're good rules to live by, but living by them took me very far from where I started.
