Doesn't that usually backfire? The more you stall with the updates, the more people give up on the fic, and you end up with even less reviews.

Hurts other writers too, doesn't it? Once you get a certain amount of writers doing that in a fandom, the readers start getting wary of all the fics in it. I'm seeing that happen right now (along with a heap of other issues) in the Ranma fandom. Too many writers playing hostage or dragging things out, and the readership is falling off drastically.

It's a delicate balance. I know every writer is different, but I don't drag it out forever. I've said it in another comment, for me, it's just the difference between updating daily, twice a week, or weekly. If someone's going to give up on a fic because I update every Wednesday when I used to update every day, I.. don't know what to tell them. The story is still getting out there. It's just taking longer to do so.

mte. If you have a couple chapters with low reviews, how are you gonna regenerate interest without posting?
