It really shouldn't matter if it's something you pay for or not or how long it's been in the works. It's just the law of supply and demand. In order to get demand up, you keep supply low. If supply is too high, demand will diminish. OP hasn't done anything wrong imo.

I don't think that works in fanfic. Authors that post more fic get more demand/reviews, because people see them as a reliable source of fic and gravitate to them. Authors that post infrequently get fewer because people have the opportunity to find and see them, some people just get tired of waiting or wary and decide to wait until they finish to be sure it doesn't get abandoned and they're left hanging.

Of course this is altered some by quality and authors being clear about their posting. Frequent or slow posting, people tend to read quality fic when they find it, and if the author just has a note saying "I post infrequently" then readers are more often content to wait.
