It's definitely frustrating, especially if you're a fan of the older thing, but I don't think it has much validity as an actual critique. It doesn't stop the new things being progressive. It's not like getting one good thing solves all the underlying problems, you know?

If I'm honest, when I have that kind of reaction, it's usually more about me geeking out about the older thing that I like and trying to convince people to read it, more than anything else. That's just me, obviously. But, I don't know, it's always frustrating when you think people are overlooking something you love that's old and obscure in favor of the new flashiness. I don't think this is fundamentally that different.

I definitely don't think it stops the new thing from being progressive. It still changes the context though and I think that matters if you're claiming to be doing an analysis that looks at the history and ramifications of this sort of thing.

Your second paragraph is part of it for me too. "Ooh, if you like this then you should try that and that and isn't it awesome that there's more of this than you thought?!"

Yeah, fair. I mean, if someone is saying that something is actually completely novel, and they're factually wrong, there's not much you can say about that.

But I just think a lot of it is more about our feelings than anything else, you know?

Yeah, I'm not going to deny that I know exactly what you're saying about feeling like something beloved is being overlooked.
