I do. If very few people care about reading my fanfic, then I won't go through the hassle of posting it. I realize a lot of people think this is entitled, but they don't offer a very reasonable alternative, i.e. that I should spend my limited free time working on a story without any hope of an audience who cares enough to tell me so.

This isn't entitled; it's quite reasonable, imo.

It's your work, you do whatever you want with it. You don't owe it to anyone to continue it.

It's not like you're actually demanding or expecting reviews, you're making an assessment if it's worth the work of posting your fic based on how well it is recieved, which is no different from what the professionals do.

I agree: as long as you do not post your conditions, I can't blame you for it, it's a very understandable, human reaction.

Having said that, this is exactly why I never read WIPs, even from authors I know and trust. I have been burned once too often either by stories that were never completed or by authors who simply wandered off to another fandom. It's their right, after all.

It's all well and good saying fanfic writers should write for themselves, but lack of positive feedback must be very hard to take. Which I why I don't blame authors for not completing fics or taking forever to post the next chapter, I just don't read WIPs...

I have also learned the hard way to never leave feedback or kudos on incomplete stories, because nothing makes me more mad than leaving a positive comment to a story which very next chapter will drive me to drop it for sudden character assassination (when a character suddenly starts acting completely OOC), or an unannounced Mary Sue popping up out of nowhere etc.

And it happens, sadly enough, even from good writers... the only way to ensure one will not get this kind of disappointment is to limit oneself to completed stories only.
