Re: geek girls & dating

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Your brother might mean well, but he has no idea what he's talking about. The whole "fake geek girl" thing is the most obvious issue, and it ties into the issue that geek girls are going to get a lot more scrutiny than boys do to "prove" their geek cred.

It also matters what KIND of geek you are and frankly, looks still matter because they always matter when we're talking in generalities. Unlike what you're brother is implying, geek guys aren't so hard up that any female with a pulse is acceptable. The geek community is known for being judgy as fuck, especially when it comes to women. Look at damn near any portrayal of geek guys in pop culture, whether it's TV or movies or whatever: are they with a geek girl? Or are they with the head cheerleader? Even in cases where they end up with a geek girl, is it a situation where it's a guy with stereotypically "geeky" features (e.g. bad skin, teeth, hair, glasses, social skills, overweight) who's paired with a hot girl with glasses?

That ought to tell you (and your brother) everything about how "easy" it is for a geek girl to date. And lest I come off sounding like bitter, I'd like to state that 1) I am not a hot girl with glasses, 2) I have only ever dated geek guys and 3) I am currently married to one though he doesn't label himself as such. But while I didn't face huge obstacles, I know damn well that's not the case for everyone.
