Someone who lives here, but I post named infrequently enough that I doubt I'm who you were talking about...

If you feel like getting away from the touristy areas, the Springs Preserve might be a fun outing.

It's also a great area for hiking if you can manage to get out of town. For the fall / winter, Red Rock Canyon is one of the best and closest places; if you go back in the summer, Mount Charleston. But I don't know if there's any transportation out there if you don't have a car.
