Yeah. I see a lot of people saying "oh they just mean the extreme cases" but I'm like.."even then why not get straight to what actually causes the problem rather than making a statement that you shouldn't do this or that. The way I see it when things happen to my OCs, those things shape who they are. So not having them happen wouldn't be true to the character.


I agree. I think that's an overly simplistic piece of "advice' that takes one kernel of logic- "you should be well informed on what you're writing about" and makes it black and white. I would more likely say "use what you know in your writing."

It gets closer to that kernel of logic but it doesn't automatically exclude writing about other things.

"Use what you know, learn what you don't"
