Pissed me off: This Evangeline Lily gif set cropping up on my Tumblr feed wherein she's talking about "strong female characters" and how it supposedly sucks that female characters lately "emulate men," when "our compassion, our selflessness, our instincts to help, to protect, to put others first" should really be what we look for in female characters. I think it's annoying as shit because it's just a retread of the same bullshit gender essentialism and these morons are like, "Oh, she's all about lady power! Yeah!" when it's not saying "Women are diverse and female characters can be tough and awesome, whether traditionally feminine or traditionally masculine" - it's saying women should embrace traditionally feminine traits because women are essentially a certain way, which is annoying as fucking hell. A femmy female character is great and a butch female character is great. It doesn't have to motherfucking be either/or. God damn it.

Made me happy: This gifset I saw on Tumblr where Nichelle Nichols was relating a story about how Martin Luther King dissuaded her from quitting Star Trek because Uhura was a positive portrayal of an African American on an American TV show as an equal and beneficial member of the crew.

The Evangeline Lilly thing is annoying. Especially when her character spends a great deal of Desolation of Smaug making googly eyes at the hot dwarf, because it makes me think THAT'S her idea of a "strong female". I suppose the being a good ranger/scout/archer thing was "emulating men"? Ugh.

I don't know. I suppose it could have been taken out of context but it definitely annoys me to see stupid tags attached to it like "You go girl" and "BURN STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS". Ugggggh.
