I think that's perfectly reasonable, OP. If you're invested in writing it, you'll update one of these days anyhow; if you have something more fun to do/write, you can prioritize those.
It gives people time to leave feedback to each update, instead of writing one comment at the end. Some people might check back on it to see if it has updated, or reread and leave another comment etc.
And really? I only write fanfic for the feedback. I can imagine the fanfics without writing them down, or reuse the ideas for original writing otherwise.
A handful of kudos is enough to keep me going, but if I got no reaction, I would stop.
Stop and write more original fiction in my mother tongue that is.
Because if I want to write for the sake of it, why would I choose English where I will suck a lot more at it? Only to share it with a wider audience.
People write to get read. Comments and kudos are the best sign of that, this shouldn't be a surprise to anybody.
