Heh, I recall a Worldcon panel back in around 2003, where Lois McMaster Bujold said her writing modus operandi for writing was to say, "What's the worst possible thing I can do to this character?" So then she would do that. And then George RR Martin turned to her, laughed, and went, "Yeah, pretty much."

Which, incidentally, is why I wasn't at all surprised when Oberyn lost that duel. Not because I was spoiled (I wasn't), but because it's the worst outcome for everybody.

I tend to go for what will be most likely to build the character and have them learn. Whatever would push them in the right direction (or the right wrong direction if it's that sort.)

If I went with the worst thing, Skye's little brother would have actually died in book 2 and he would have had a breakdown and kinda shut down and try to hurt or kill himself.
