Talk to the host. If there is meant to be a meal as part of the event just ask if you can have a piece of bread or something to nibble on before the dinner. If there's not planned a meal, I would think it was OK to ask if you could make something a bit more advanced than a piece of bread or even suggest that you could order pizza. Odds are that there are more people than just you that are hungry.

This counts mostly for things like home parties. If you are at a more public event you can try going to the kitchen (if there is one) and again ask for a piece of bread or something.
