well, that's awfully convenient for one side, isn't it?

write it for yourself & for the art, but don't be "selfish" by keeping it away from others, or by wanting feedback!

I get the advice "writing it for yourself" so you won't be disappointed and keep writing what you personally enjoy, but let's not pretend that the reader is entitled to the writer's efforts in turn. they're the side who profits more and risks less.

I don't think wanting feedback is selfish, all I mean is that personal satisfaction is a more reliable source of pleasure than depending solely on feedback from others. Like, both is fine, but if you for some reason hypothetically only had one, I think personal satisfaction would be better. But I know that you can't just...change that about yourself at will, so.

In an ideal world, I'd agree, but people have lots of motives for writing. Personal satisfaction is a good one, but it's not the only one, and whether or not it's the best one rather depends on the individual view of the writer, don't you think?

But the writing I do for myself is not really fit for public consumption. The public is not bilingual. The public doesn't generally like sentences a mile long. Then there's spelling, grammar, making sure the tense is consistent etc. These are all things I don't need for myself, but I find them a courtesy before sharing things on the net.

So if I notice that there's not really anyone reading the stuff I'm cleaning up? I'd rather write some more fic just for myself. Jumbled language and all.

Did you miss the "possibly" part?

no. "write for yourself" only means writing for yourself and nobody else.

I'm sure it's most often said with that "possibly" clause in mind, because it's coming from people who also hope to enjoy a writer's work.

if it's ONLY for the benefit of the author, then it would say "and then possibly sharing it with others for feedback (of appreciation andor criticism) after you let go of the need of validation"
