OP (TL;DR I am so sorry)
(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 02:52 am (UTC)(link)Technically I started the show when it first aired & lost interest/the will to keep up after episode 4. But, I'm home for the summer for my last summer before senior year of college. I have a lot of free time on my hands & wanted to devote it to marathoning various shows. I have a Tumblr mutual/friend who loves this show (it's her favorite, and through my association with her, I've gained a handful more OUaT aficionados this past month.)
Similarly, I know that its fandom is huge (there've been quite a few more secrets about it here in the past few months than I remember there being throughout the show's run.) I wanted to know what the draw was. I've heard opposing opinions about its quality and wanted to form my own opinion. I like the costuming. I love Ginnifer Goodwin and I like the rest of the cast even though I think they're all turning in poor performances throughout. I like the graphics on Tumblr and I like the cast.
I made it 50 episodes in because I want to see the development of the Emma/Hook relationship because I've gathered it features a few tropes I like. I also heard there was time travel in the back half of s3 and as a lifelong fan of Back to the Future, time travel is relevant to my interests. I actually haven't watched in weeks because I hate it so much and because the pop up ads on project free TV drive me batty, but the episodes seem shorter than they are (probably because at least in the first season & a half they were splitting their time between two distinct settings.) Now that they've cast yet another actor I like for their Frozen arc, I'm thinking I'll probably wait until s3 is available on Netflix Instant because it's easier to watch there without the pop up ads.
Oh, and my roommate (who also tried watching it from the get-go and hated it immediately because of how terrible it was) said she was considering starting it again and we thought it might be a fun thing to do simultaneously this summer so we'd have something to discuss. It's funny; when it first started, I liked it okay & just got too busy to catch up. Upon catching up or trying to, I've found that I hate it and find it mind-numbingly boring. Meanwhile, she hated it and now she's actually kind of invested and she likes it and thinks the characters are interesting/sympathetic.
Basically, I keep expecting it to get better for so many people to be so invested. I keep waiting for that moment that I connect with the characters so I can understand how people can have favorites in this fandom. I get that fans often flock to shows with fascinating concepts/world-building and attempt to fix problems in canon with fic. But I'm really drawn to characters, and no matter how fascinating the concept, I cannot connect to any of them. I don't understand the investment or ship wars because the characters are so wooden, their relationships hold no emotional resonance, and they don't develop all that well. This show turns every character, even beloved Disney favorites, into assholes. I don't understand the appeal, but I'm still here because I WANT to understand the appeal.
I'm sorry for this teal deer. I'm a bit verbose. This is basically everything I wanted to convey with my secret. Sorry I've dumped it on you.
