The stories I've heard was that if Gillen hadn't finished his run on JiM when he did it was going to be cancelled too. JiM was on its last legs no matter who was the star of the book.

The Mighty Avengers change is happening. Mighty Avengers was cancelled and is being relaunched as Captain America and the Mighty Avengers. Ewing is still writing it, I can't remember who's on art but it's not Land (who is the artist for Spider-Woman).
