I feel you, sort of? Though it's more Georgian/regency with me. Nothing fills me with more amusement and rage at the same time than manly male reviewers complaining about the language in Naomi Novik's novels because according to them no man would ever call his buddy "my dear", and only a woman could even consider writing shit like that. :/ Yeah, I bet ever reading letters from the periods and finding out about hugging/kissing/touching your male friends was totally a-ok and a heterosexual thing to do would be too much for their poor little hearts.

Honestly, manly male anythings can really suck.

Yeah, I agree that's silly. The people making those complaints don't know much about the time period and they clearly don't know that this type of platonic intimacy didn't scream "gay".
