Because LGBT characters are so scant in media lots of characters and relationships interpreted that way won't actually be canon.
I think the real problem is when people pretend that their interpretations are the actual intent of the creators, because then you're just pretending psuedo subtext is actual LGBT representation.

And that pretending is something we get a LOT of with Victorian literature, because what screams "gay!" to a modern reader screamed "Platonic friends!" to the Victorians.
