There will always be some number of people shipping any given thing, but it's important to remember that not every person ships every single thing. Everyone chooses which ships they view as romantic and which they view as friendships. The "can't we value friendship any more!" feelings understandably arise when viewing fandom en masse. But remember, fandom en masse ships the Sorting Hat with Dobby, and Merlin's dragon with that thing that thought the Enterprise was it's mother. But in reality there are just half a dozen people who ship those things, and everyone else knows that Dobby and the Sorting Hat were just really good friends.
