If they've read a detailed description of a costume, they'll have a pretty good idea. Maybe they won't be able to tell if color is correct without a friend's confirmation, but if you know the specific elements of the costume it's not as hard as you think to tell from touch if you're being presented with an accurate costume.

For example, that Barbara Gordon's classic Batgirl costume is a cowl-style mask with eyeholes and the lower face open and pointy bat ears on the top of her head, a cape with deep dagged edges, a bodysuit with a bat emblem on the chest (probably applique, so you could tell by touch), a wide utility belt with a bat buckle, knee-high boots that come to a bat shape at the top, and elbow-length gloves with three pointed blade thingys. And shoulder-length wavy hair.
