In the modern world? No. Women may hug each other briefly during times of extreme emotional distress. Men may hit each other in times of extreme emotional distress, and I believe they may greet each other with slaps on the behind. However, the males must be especially close friendship wise and all physical interactions must be concluded with a verbal 'no homo' loud enough for everyone to hear.

It's probably not that way in most of the Western world.

Even in the English-speaking world, women are not generally as cold as what iceyred describes. She's exaggerating for comic effect.

Okay, this depends on the people we're talking about. I'm a Western woman, and have always been clingy and huggy with my best female friends. I walk down the street with linked arms with my close girl friends, we share beds, we lay on one another's laps when watching movies. I'm more touchy feely than most people, but I am not an abnormality.

And I can't personally speak for guys, but my little brother (17 year old high school boy) is pretty touchy around his close guy friends. They aren't afraid to lay on one another while sharing a couch watching TV, he has sleepovers that involve a several friends just in a pile of blankets on the floor together wearing only underwear, and so on. He's straight, for the record, just really comfortable around his friends. Modern men might have more fear of being perceived as gay than the past (?) but plenty of guys aren't afraid of physical affection with their friends.
