Fic revision etiquette ?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-29 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I finished a long fic a few years ago that I just looked over again. It has a lot of typos and missing words in it, and also a couple of things that I'd just like to change slightly, both sentence structure and some small details.

Is it ok to just go in and change them? Should I add an author note saying this was revised on [date] for x and y? What if I wanted to make bigger changes, like deleting chapters or adding new ones? How important is it that I follow the right protocols in revising?

Help me not commit a fandom faux pas!

If you're fixing grammar issues and typos, then no note is needed imo. I think a note would be a good idea if you do any significant changes like deleting entire chapters.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to go back and do some fixing, and rewriting. I've seen people do it quite often in some fandoms. I'm fixing all kinds of things in fics I've already posted all the time. I'm not sure how often people usually leave notes noting the changes. When I go in to fix mistakes I've found I don't usually bother, but if I rewrote a noticeable part, I'd leave a note just so readers wouldn't get confused.

I do this all the time, though I very rarely make any substantive change. My feeling is that cleaning up typos is good on general principle, that re-readers don't notice minor word smithing (maybe readers will think "hey this fic is even better than I remember!"). I do put the revision date at the bottom of the fic.

The only time I made a non-trivial change it was because a one shot grew into a series and i had to rethink a villain I had made one-dimensional. In this case I did mention the changes and my reasons for them in author's notes.

Echoing the rest of the fandom choir to say go right ahead re: typoes and missing words and small details and sentence structures. I don't reread the fic I've written too often because every single time I do, I can hardly get too paragraph before I have to open up a text editor.

As for chapter deletion/additions, just add a note and you'll be fine. If there are enormous changes, I've seen some authors be like "every past chapter x was rewritten, i have a copy of the original if anyone really wants to reread that. pm me if you want it" and no drama was to be found.

Thanks everyone for answering! These answers are helpful and also a huge relief; I was worried I was going to have to leave all the typos in for "honesty" or something.
