I was completely gutted in a way that doesn't generally happen for me with celebrity deaths.

I'm Canadian, and I was really surprised how many other people not from the UK a) knew who he was, and b) were deeply, deeply upset. A lot of his stuff never aired in North America (I only saw The New Statesman this year), but Blackadder and Young Ones did.

DA

Back in the day, there was a lot of videotape-sharing that took place by way of Usenet and snail-mail postal services. So it could have spread that way?

Source: I am very old.

Always nice to meet another person who remembers Usenet. *raises a toast*

Fourthed, actually. I don't think there's been a better way invented to communicate on the intertubes.

LOL. Well, that and syndication; I got about two channels growing up and one played a lot of BBC shows.

Also people moved and brought stuff with them. I originally saw Young Ones via VCR tapes that a friend mailed to me (also old), but much of the British TV I've seen has been from British people who moved here and introduced me to the shows they watched.

Yep. Blackadder, The Young Ones, and also Comic Strip Presents aired in the U.S., but it was a very nice thing here, I think. But if you were an American into British comedy during the 80s, you very likely knew about Rik Mayall.

Same - It was the first bit of news I'd seen when I woke up that day and I just started crying, and it just kept happening throughout the day without warning. I don't even cry like that when people I've known die.

Some of the images that people posted directly after killed me. There was one of Vyvyan at his grave that made me bawl.

The New Statesman did air in North America, FTR, though I'm not sure how extensively - at least one PBS station (the one out of Rochester, NY) aired it in the mid-90s (probably not long after it's British run ended)...I caught it back then, because it starred Mayall (that it covered similar ground to Yes, (Prime) Minister, another show I loved, helped). Not (P)Rik's best work, but that's a pretty high bar to cross, anyway - how could it possibly beat The Young Ones or Blackadder? (Better than Drop Dead Fred, I think, but...that's not as high a bar.)

I was really devastated too, and I am a USAnian.
