Writing dialect requires a deft ear and hand. Writers have been trounced for 'getting it wrong' even if they earnestly try to get it right. So it's possible, to avoid grief, they're leaving it to the reader's imagination to fill in the voice.

I think that's actually not a bad tactic if you don't feel comfortable with voice. Especially in fanfic, where readers already have a voice in their head. As long as the canon voice isn't being actively contradicted by the fic voice, no harm no foul.

And AAVE in particular has such a long & toxic history of misrepresentation that I'd personally rather see it not attempted than done badly.
