To my shame I only know Tolkien's stuff through the movies. I shouldn't, it seems right up my alley, but I'm daunted by huge epics. I'm oddly fascinated by wheat I heard of the Silmarillion, but unsure if I'd enjoy the read.

I can certainly sympathize with people who don't like or find Silmarillion daunting. The first time I read it, it was way too much. There are at least a dozen characters whose names all begin with "E" or "F", and some characters will be introduced with one name ("Elwe/Thingol" for example) and then be referred to by a subsequent name for the rest of the book, and you don't necessarily realize that's the case until later. Not to mention all the place-names. Most of the book takes place in a region to the west of Hobbiton, which means that most of the place-names are not in LOTR or the movies.

That said, I found some fanfiction on Henneth Annun that was gen and pretty in character. When I read smaller snippets of the tale that dug deeper into the events of the book, it was mind-blowingly awesome what Tolkien created, and then rereading the Simarillion was much easier.

I'm not sure if you're interested in a recommendation, but I would suggest "The Children of Hurin" if you want to try a Tolkien book that's more serious in tone than The Hobbit but isn't as big as LOTR or as involved as Silmarillion. My copy is only about 300 pages. Unlike Silmarillion, CoH is a story (rather than a history) and there are fewer characters. It's kind of depressing but it's very epic. It revolves around a cursed character and really evokes some of the old Norse myth feel. I can tell you more if you'd like. I think you'd get a general idea of Tolkien's style from it and see if you'd enjoy the other stuff.

I'd just like to second the recommendation of Children of Hurin if you like what you've heard of the Silm but aren't sure you'd like reading it straight through. It is a major downer, though. Curses all the way down.
