what? if both sides are down for it then I don't see the problem and I definitely wouldn't call that manipulative. I mean, if you want to go that far then you could argue that proposals in general are manipulative because any people would feel pressured to say yes to one regardless of the situation. if someone finds it romantic for their partner to propose to them on a giant ass jumbotron then I don't see the big deal.

Well, in a public proposal, there's more than two parties involved, don't forget. Even if the two people consent to put on this show, the question to ask is why they feel the need to stage it like a performance? It's to manipulate the emotions of the audience, of course. Whether or not this is a bad thing is up for debate, but you can't really argue the intent isn't to affect them in some way, otherwise the proposal wouldn't need to be public.

If it makes you cringe it makes you cringe, but that doesn't make it objectively bad. Tons of people find it romantic.
