I hate phonetically spelled accents for pretty much the same reason as you. I'm reading this fic, which means I know the characters and how they talk on the show. I don't need you spelling every "nonstandard" pronunciation out for me. (Plus it makes shit way harder to read, like when people write Southern characters saying Ah instead of I. Never do that. It's terrible.)

But you don't have to write like you're doing dialogue for a minstrel comic to get across the way the characters speak, you know? In some ways I'm happy, because I don't have to read agonizing attempts at written AAVE, but these fics could be so much richer with well-done dialect.
