The Magicians by Lev Grossman

^^ I'm reading it, and it's not this amazingly clever thing that so many people have said it was, but it's been an OK read. Except it just got really distasteful in the second half, and I'm wondering if somebody can tell me whether I can expect more of the same or if it gets better. Details in the reply.

So, I'm in Part II, Quentin has been really distant with Alice, then he cheats on her with Janet, says Alice "hits like a girl -- with no weight behind it," Penny rocks back and forth "autistically" and Janet is a "vampire who preys on healthy relationships, making them sick and twisted."

Basically, it turned into one giant "Everybody sucks but me, especially these women and Penny." And I'd just like to know if Quentin's attitude ends up being validated or if he gets some sense knocked into him.

In the first book, his attitude is validated. I didn't bother with the sequel, so I don't know if Quentin becomes less annoying.

Well, now I kind of wish this wasn't a book I just decided to take a chance on buying. I'll finish it, but I'm no longer hopeful about it. Between this and Redshirts I'm having a really bad track record with books this year.
