Also, it's a peaceful country when bike theft is your number one crime.

It turns out that while Japanese people are on the whole much thinner, I wouldn't actually say they're on the whole any more active or fit, to be honest. At least not moreso than someone in the West who lives in a city where they have to bike or walk some of the time and eats relatively well. A hike up a small hill just about killed some of my fellow grad students here, whereas back home when I was doing my masters' an array of mostly white students manage to hike with me just fine, and they were many, many pounds heavier.
This is all just observation and anecdata, of course. Someone who lives a more or less sedentary life back home might think Japanese people walk a whole lot.
