Re: Tolkien

My irrational affection for Frog Thranduil and his Outrageous Accent is deep and wide, but that's neither here nor there. :) At least Rankin-Bass elves can get drunk.

Jackson has stated they had Faramir tempted by the ring because if he hadn't been, it would have negated the evil/strength of the ring.

Lack of subtlety strikes again!

Tolkien was all about the self-inserts. There's no shame in it. Faramir's a good guy who does the right thing and later gets to marry the cool sad shieldmaiden, but I wouldn't call him a Stu. He's not outlandishly good or sickeningly good or ridiculously badass -- he's just a regular fantasy good guy. Actually, the fact that he shows up and DOESN'T turn out to be an antagonist and DOES believe the hobbits and try to help them is really refreshing and cool imo.

I really like having genuinely good characters, too. And flawed characters are fine -- but do they have to all be flawed in the same way? And the ring is explicitly stated to effect people differently according to their personality and desires (at least in the beginning), right? That's why Frodo was able to carry it for months on end in the first place.

Ok, enough ranting for one night. But yeah, I agree that the weakest points of the movie were Team Jackson's plot and character changes. At least they didn't end up having Aragorn sword-fight Fair Form!Sauron at the end like they planned, eh?
