I was wondering if that's what OP was going for, but quoting a character who happens to be gay doesn't mean the quoter is gay. I know a lot of straight people, male and female, who absolutely adored Rent.

But I guess I can see how someone who's in the closet might want to be uber careful about things like that.

I wouldn't think so. Weren't Benny, Roger, Mark, and Mimi all straight? That should be enough to give straight people "permission" to like and even relate to it.

I just thought if I said the line outloud I'd have to explain the context of the quote, which obviously is a woman and a guy singing about the same woman. A lot of straight people I know tend to be nosy and wouldn't hesitate to ask me if I was gay because of that and I don't like to talk about that stuff at work! Sorry for the confusion, I thought people would just find this secret cute/funny.

I don't know that they would have, it's just been my experience with straight people. "Omg she never talks about boys! Maybe she's gay! Let's be really weird about it." I feel more annoyed/amused than threatened, usually.
