The problem is that she's a shittily written character on a show full of shittily written characters. Of course the show doesn't have any understanding of how to show that she's smart or socially capable - I don't think the show has any ability to consistently show positive character attributes for anyone involved. Someone said on here before that what "social intelligence" boils down to in Penny's case is the ability to get laid, and I think there's a lot of truth to that. It's just an awfully written show.

Yeah, I tend to agree. The writing for this show is just not that good, period. Some people argue that she's meant to be the sympathetic one the audience identifies with, but... I dunno, maybe it's just me but I don't. I'm not particularly smart OR geeky compared to the guys, but Penny is as alien to me as any of them for other reasons.

Yeah, this. I don't know why my mom likes such a consistently mean show. Everyone is a jerk!

AYRT - to be clear here, I don't actually dislike the show. It has a lot of really good comic performers and enough humorous moments for me to enjoy it, even if it's a little broad. And, I mean, the characters are jerks, but so are the characters on Seinfeld (not that BBT is anywhere near Seinfeld in terms of quality. you get what I'm saying).

But I don't think it's a show where you can take the characters or their emotional arcs very seriously at all, because if you try to take them seriously a little, they're mostly awful and have almost no redeeming qualities.

I honestly used to like all the characters at one or point or another in the show, and each one of them has done or said something that made me dislike them. I pretty much still watch it just for the pop culture references.

On a sidenote, I can't believe that the actors are basically holding the show hostage by demanding higher pay. iirc it's a million dollars more per episode. You're right, it's full of shittily written characters and I don't know if the actors will actually get what they're asking for. Not with a fall lineup of The Flash, Gotham, and Constantine which target the same audience that TBBT has. I liked the first few seasons, but I honestly could care less if the show was cancelled at this point. The show isn't going anywhere character or plot-wise.

TBBT makes a ton of money for Warner Bros. and CBS, they will get their raises.

I can't see the average CBS sitcom watcher abandoning TBBT for any of those shows. I think you're confusing the fans who talk about the show online and relate to Sheldon and the rest of the geeks with Mr. & Ms. Joe and Jane Middle-Aged Average who watch the show to unwind after a long day at work.

They deserve the money. It's their work, in large part, that's made the show as massively successful and profitable as it is.
