It was reasonably long and plotty, followed them through some angst and h/c and I think ended inthem retiring to a house by a lake?

I wish I could! Although tbh I'll take any even vaguely similar recs. I'm starving for some SandH fic.

I can't think of anything very similar off the top of my head, but a few weeks ago, intrigueing gave some other anon a really impressive list of recs in a fic request thread (I put the URL to the thread below).

Most of them are gen, but some of them are slash too, and some of them are angst or h/c.

Perhaps you'd like The Goliath? Also, Red Flowers in Winter is slash and h/c, but it's not very long.

Hm, you sure they were retired? I recall a fic where they were vacationing (in an undercover capacity) in a house by the lake.

I can think of a few where the fic is set at a house by a lake, but none where they eventually retire there, sorry OP :(
