Not... really. In the episodes with Penny taking college classes the show makes a joke out of how terrible she is and learning basically anything.

Really? That's a shame. I stopped watching the show a while ago, so undoubtedly I've missed things. It sounds rather OOC for her, to be honest. Intro (freshmen) level classes aren't that hard, and Penny *is* a high school graduate. The show at least hasn't provided any canon reason for her to struggle. But I guess as others have noted, the show isn't known for its consistency.

Tbf we never saw how well Penny would've done by herself, the main thrust of the episode was Leonard insensitively replacing her first essay with his own version, and the resulting fall-out.

Wow, that's really low. And sadly unsurprising. I don't know how anyone can make the case that Penny is the bad guy and all of the guys are just a bunch of sweet, socially-awkward guys in comparison. Leonard's attitude toward Penny's education has always been rotten.

I think those are probably the same people that complain about women 'taking advantage of men with their feminine wiles'.
