They weren't always called memes? :P

But yeah, I love those, they're dumb sometimes, but they're kind of funny too. :D

I never heard the term "meme" used for things like this until around 2003-2004, and I'm talking about like 1995 here...

And it's totally the lowest form of humor, but I never claimed to be sophisticated. ;)

Were they called anything before "meme", or did they just exist?
pantswarrior: Laguna scratches his head. (huh?)

Uh... there were webrings for them? XD Like I remember laughing my head off when I found out there was an "Ate My Balls" webring. But aside from that, I don't think anyone called them anything collectively. I don't remember it, if so... Maybe someone else old like me remembers.

That's really cool! I think I started on the computer a little bit late for webrings, so I didn't know that. :D
pantswarrior: Kotetsu smiles, because everything's going to be fine. (kotetsu)

Oooh yeah. Webrings were the THING back in those days, really the only good way to find websites. No Google, and Yahoo's search engine took FOREVER to get stuff added even if you manually submitted it. There was stuff like the Anime Web Turnpike for those fandoms, a fan-run web hub that was kept reasonably up to date for awhile, but they were niche sites for specific fandoms and types of fandoms, which may or may not contain more dead links than live links.

I actually remember when Google first started up and one of my cohorts on the website I was working on at the moment came into chat and was like "Check this site out! Go there and type in your name and hit the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button!" So we did, and since all of us were non-celebrities whose closest thing to a claim to fame was that website, it took us all to our staff profiles on the site, and we were like "OMG HOLY CRAP!" and started just typing all kinds of stuff in - and getting results! It was amazing, hahahah.
