But when a capable adult chooses to remain uneducated and ignorant, it's not much different from being stupid.

There is a fine line, but it's important not to confuse the two. Ignorance can be cured, stupidity can not - often, stupidity does get in the way, so I can understand how anyone can have a hard time differentiating stupidity and ignorance.
