I confess to not understanding why people would recommend those; I couldn't even get into them when I was a horny teenager pre-internet with almost no access to kinky porn. That's how bad they are.

Back in the 90s, slash fandom in general was really excited about them because it was so rare back then to see kink and same-sex relations in mainstream books.

Er... no, these were absolutely NOT mainstream books, they are what is called erotica. It's a genre.

Even nowadays, you'll find them in the Erotica section, not the main Fiction category in any reasonably sized bookstore...

Well, if you want to waste a few hours of your life you'll never get back... they're probably rather better or at least less problematic than the 50 Shades of Grey books if you need a reference point?
