OMG, you make it sound like it was in the Middle Ages and that he'd have been stoned for it... I can guarantee that this was absolutely not the case, even back then.

He would simply have had his books ostracized as 'genre' if he had written books centered on an explicitly homosexual relationship. But that would happen today as well, you only need to look at the reception of 'Brokeback Mountain' to see that...

Whereas by writing about a purely 'platonic' friendship, his books have achieved enduring public acclaim and are highly respected in both historical and literary circles.

It was published in the 60's. Brokeback Mountain was published in the 90's. 30 years has made a big difference in attitudes towards homosexuality.
