Novels offer far more insight on Dietrich's behavior (and all the Orden's). There's even Orden only episodes/tales where he acts as a whiny brat who complains to Isaak or as a cruel pransker. I did a full Dietrich analysis to play him in Poly. Here (http://sir-hellsing.livejournal.com/356428.html) for you.

I read your Dietrich I always feel like he's a fawning sycophant, not a sociopath. Perhaps you don't read him as a sociopath, which is fine. This is probably a clash of perspective.

Oh. He IS a sociopath. But he's also part of a court who has a script to play. That sycophant act is COMPLETELY purposeful on my side. I was glad you said it and saw it. It's Dietrich's current little act. He has done a lot of selective torture (Radu, his interactions with Light - like is daemon day where he proded people's souls to see the pain reaction and enlisted Light to go with him- breaking Cirucci Thunderwitch, setting up Asta to give in the thirst, etc).

It also feels like you say he's both just a victim of circumstance but also inherently evil, which is a contradiction. But again, mostly based on reading and I have no idea to your authorial intent.

I gave you the link above. His family assumed he was evil to the bone, after five years or so of treating him like a monster for being smart (oh geeee, surprise he showed an evil inclination when no one taught him morals ._. I find him a very pitiful character).

But just for you, await more true colors!Dietrich in private soon. I often understand readers/people who are in game or not, KNOW that the guy is a complete fake (OOCLY I mean). But your input will be listened to remind them: he's up to NO good. Well, he THINKS is good, ironically... He DOES believe the Orden WILL improve the world. L-Lol. I can see the Orden POV. Where the Vatican's and Empire's systems threaten to dominate and fester...

Orden started as a group of philosophers, the Golden Dawn, that were discontented with the world they lived. The state of humanity, science, etc, were so deplorable. Isaak and Cain militarized it. Hell, Dietrich's and Isaak's science is labeled witchcraft by the Vatican and thus heresy. Sure, they aren't good, but Vatican isn't a special pure snownflake either. Including the Ax: Monica Argento (Black Widow) tried to KILL Abel, and ISAAK pushed him out the way to stake the stab in RAM VI. As you see... there's a lot of layers if a bad guy saved a good guy from one of his team members.

I see how activity is working against you as well, since the impression that comes off of the RP is that Dietrich controls everything (which may be true? He is the puppetmaster behind many things) but that all the pieces are set around him.

This wasn't in the beginning. Dietrich set those pieces around him with patience and time. I invested a LOT of rp time for this too. Because Dietrich's very, very proactive. Unless he's bored... he's got mad mood swings. He wanted to CONTROL the situation and worked hard to this happen. This is a guy who became a superior of the Orden when he was 10, being a Terran WITHOUT any power, he is fairly obsessive in getting his way through acts.

So my surprise was rather great when I saw what seemed to be a huge clash between my own perspective and the secret writer's.

I understand and respect it. :) I'll give a reminder of evil!Dietrich for those who missed old posts. TB itself for the complexity of characters gives room to MANY interpretations, so I know what you are coming from, even if I don't agree.
