Weeeeell I think for the REALLY HUGE THINGS, loose familiarity is all you need! Like if you had, say, Squall from FF8 frolicking through a field of daisies, everyone and their mother would know it was massively OOC. For subtle things, though, I totally agree that you can't say "WHEN YOUR CHARACTER PICKED HIS LEFT NOSTRIL THAT WAS TOTALLY OOC, I HAVE A GUT FEELING HE SHOULD HAVE PICKED HIS RIGHT".... or something like that.

If Rinoa's love hasn't turned Squall into a daisy-frolicking new man already. True love does that!

Probably the only reason he wasn't frolicking among the daisies was because he was too busy carrying Rinoa on his back hither and yon.

There was a time when FF8 yaoi was nearly non-existent. How I remember those times fondly.

Back when FFnet was still new and still allowed NC-17 fics. Back then, yaoi pairings existed, but they were few... at least, the crack pairings (Squall/Fujin, Quistis/Laguna) and the Mary Sues outnumbered them still. Most people, at least the circle I was in, mostly found the idea of Irvine hitting on Squall, or Zell and Seifer doing so, being simply OOC.

Now, it seems yaoi is a norm. I'm not anti-yaoi per se, but it is unsettling to see how mainstream it is now.

I wish Quistis and Selphie were in more fics. And that Rinoa was portrayed less as Little Princess LookAtMe from Disk 1-2, and more like the disk 3-4 Rinoa, who was much more likeable.

Most of the yaoi isn't even well-written. It's just "SQUALL IZ A MODEL AND SEIFER IZ A COP AND THEY HAVE SEX A LOT R/R PLZ"

I don't even remember how Rinoa was in disk 3-4. She feels the same to me. Obviously, I wasn't very fond of Rinoa as a character. Still, I strongly dislike heroine bashing solely for the sake of getting another pairing going. (Rinoa sucks, go Quistis/Seifer/Zell/Selphie! theme in some fics annoy)

That's because it's usually young teens writing them... Which is a scary fact in itself.

Rinoa got way more mature in disks 3/4 imo! But it's easy to miss, because most people were too busy gagging over Squall's personality 180.

Now that you mention it, it kind of is. But I guess it's BY 14-year olds FOR 14-year olds in most cases!

He can frolick through a field of daisies because you take the liberty of giving the character an allergy to pollen? So he ends up in a field o' flowers, weird chemical shit happens - Squall goes squee?

Buuuuuuuut. Yessum, I think you can depend on more general canon knowledge to catch the glaring, or major failings - but you'd prolly need canon savy for the subtleties. I think that's what the OP was addressing, or at least that's what it read as to me.

One of the players in the game, and speaking as a mod (Helga-mun here, hi all), and I'd like to thank all the anons as well as... non-anons, for keeping this discussion civil. sir_hellsing has helped me with my canon for Helga, and I also have access to the original Japanese myself which I am working my way through. So I do hope if anyone feels my characterization is off, they'll let me know.
