Sorry to be vague in return, but this really sounds like you should look up some various ghost towns in the United States, they almost always occur(ed) when something like logging or mining dries up in the region around the town, or something was built that made getting to the town more difficult and time consuming, like decrease in railway use for towns built around railroads or towns that were along Route 66 that dried up when the interstate highways started being built that bypassed these towns.
