Ok, ignore the differences between how each culture views/expresses friendship and romantic affection. It's not like in East Asia friendships are allowed to be more affectionate and expressive, or that the word 'daisuki' can have both a friendly-affection or romantic connotation depending on the context (and that we didn't fully get this context in the trailer). Also forget the fact that there's still a prevalent "two girls can only be friends, not have romantic interest in each other because romantic interest is inherently sexual and girls aren't really sexual" in the culture (in both cultures), and that likely colored the perception of the audience majority.

Also ignore that Ghibli has been producing movies well into this decade but has refused to give most its female protagonist any clothing or feature outside of "sweet girl next door who dresses like a grandma" because that's how they like their girls. And tumblr ppl were still expecting a gay romance? lmfao
