Can someone tell me about anything wrong with this plan? (question about U.S. PO Boxes)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm living with my family for the next few months (I work full time and everything, just to be clear). They have absolutely no idea about my fannish activities or the fact that I read fanfiction, and I am absolutely adamantly not comfortable with ever letting them know about it.

I've been dying to order a couple of old vintage zines on ebay that have stories that aren't available anywhere online, but I'm not about to order them to my home address in case they get opened (my family isn't big on privacy, which has always totally fine with me in all areas except fandom, so asking them to not open my mail is going to just attract even more attention).

So, I've decided to rent a P.O. box for a short time, and order some zines to the P.O. box and pick them up there without my family knowing about the P.O. box or ever knowing what I bought.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of ways this can screw me over. Like, will I get a big awkward notification at our home address mail about my newly-opened P.O. box that will have my family going "what P.O. box?" Could anything sent to my P.O. box ever get re-routed to my home address? I checked the website and it doesn't say much about privacy from people at your home address, only privacy from outsiders.

When you set it up at the post office, you don't need to have an additional mailing address. So you don't put one down, and thus no notifications are sent. It'll just go to the box, and you'll just check it there.

That's how it works with my po box at any rate.

Query: what type of work environment are you in? Retail or cubical world? Would you be able to have them sent to your work address or would you not want the mail room to question what you are ordering? Another possibility is if you have a good friend you can have it sent to.

You can keep a PO box completely private and separate from your residential address. You will not get notifications, and mail that's addressed to it will not be rerouted to your home.

Unless you leave things around with the PO box on it, it's unlikely that anyone will find out about it.

You can also get a private PO box at a lot of storage companies, shipping companies, things like that.

I have done exactly this, when I wanted to exchange mail with fandom friends without giving out my actual location. I got a PO Box - and was even able to fill out the form so things using my online name would go there as well - and my parents didn't know about it until almost three years later, simply because I mentioned it. Nothing ever came to my house, you can keep them completely separate without any issue at all.

Thank you everyone for your help! It's very reassuring.
